Layering season is here—and as a stylist, this might just be my favourite time of year. Autumn and winter give us a much bigger playground to create interesting, unexpected, and super stylish looks. Unlike summer—when we’re often stuck with just jeans and a top—the cooler months let us play with jumpers, blazers, coats, scarves , and so much more.
But I know layering can also feel a bit overwhelming. How do you stay warm without piling on a bulky jacket? How do you mix textures and prints without looking like you got dressed in the dark? I’ve spent over five years styling clients (and myself) through chilly mornings and unpredictable autumn weather, and today I’m letting you in on my best layering secrets.
Why Autumn is the Perfect Season for Layering
In autumn, mornings can be freezing, but by lunchtime, the sun's out and you're overheating. That’s why layering is the key to staying comfortable and chic throughout the day. When done right, layers can:
Add dimension and depth to your look
Make outfits more versatile for changing temps
Elevate basics into something unique and fashionable
Let’s dive into the practical, go-to layering methods I swear by.
The Jumper Trick: Wear It, Carry It, Style It
We all know that autumn mornings can be freezing , but by midday, we’re trying to shed layers without looking like a mess. That’s why I love using a jumper as a styling piece , not just for warmth.
You can wear it in the morning and evening when it’s chilly, but as the day gets warmer, throw it around your shoulders or tie it around your waist —it still looks good. I even love the way it drapes off a tote bag casually .
It works over blazers, coats, or even shirts. This has been my number one layering method for years—it just makes your outfit so much more weather-versatile , without compromising style

Stylist Tip: Draping a jumper over your shoulders on top of a blazer is one of my favourite layering tricks. It adds warmth and texture, while still looking polished and elegant —never bulky.

Stylist Tip: A jumper draped over your shoulders on top of a coat adds an effortless layer of style. It’s a simple way to bring texture and dimension to your look—while still keeping it chic and put-together .
Perfect Layering Jumpers
Shirt or Tee Under Jumpers: Add Warmth & Interest
Another favourite layering method of mine is wearing a shirt or a T-shirt under your jumper , especially ones with a lower neckline.
First of all, it adds something visually interesting to the outfit— a bit of contrast and structure . But what I also love is that when you’re wearing darker tones (as we often do in autumn/winter) , having a bit of white or lighter colour near your face helps brighten everything up.
Plus, this trick gives you another option for later in the day— you can take off the jumper , throw it around your shoulders, and still be left with a complete look: your tee and blazer or coat.

Stylist Tip: Layering a shirt under a jumper is a classic move that always works. The collar and cuffs add structure and contrast, giving your outfit a refined and thoughtful touch—perfect for breaking up darker autumn tones.

Stylist Tip: A white tee under a jumper keeps your look clean, casual, and effortlessly cool . It adds a pop of brightness near the face and gives you flexibility to peel off layers without losing style.
The Turtleneck Trick: Sleek, Warm, and Fuss-Free
A turtleneck is another layering hero in my wardrobe. It could be fine wool or cotton (if wool doesn’t agree with you)—either way, it’s an essential base that adds warmth without bulk .
It’s great for layering under blazers, cardigans, or coats , and gives your outfit a clean, put-together feel without needing to add anything else. I especially love it for clients who don’t like scarves— a turtleneck keeps the chill off your neck and still looks super elegant .
It’s simple, but it always works.

Stylist Tip: Layering a jumper over a turtleneck adds warmth without bulk and gives your outfit a sleek, modern edge . It’s perfect for chilly days when you want to stay cozy and look pulled together.
Double Up on Jackets: Don’t Be Afraid to Go Bold
Don’t be afraid to put two “jackets” on . Seriously! One of my go-to styling methods is layering a blazer with a coat , or even using an oversized blazer over a fitted one.
This creates a multi-dimensional look that’s warm and stylish. And the best part? When you lose the outer layer later in the day, you’re still left with a full, polished outfit underneath .
I love this technique for mixing textures—think wool over leather or tweed under a structured coat. It gives your outfit depth and interest , while staying practical for autumn’s unpredictable weather.

Final Thoughts: Layering Without the Bulk
I know that for many women, layering can feel like a fine line between looking chic and looking like you’re wearing everything you own. But with the right techniques, you can build stylish, weather-proof outfits that are practical and elegant.
It’s all about balance— mixing textures, playing with proportions , and thinking ahead so you can adapt throughout the day. Whether you're dressing for the office, a coffee date, or a crisp weekend walk, these layering methods will give you the confidence to pull it off.
